The original Post Winery was founded by Jacob Post in 1880 near the Iron Mountain Railroad Depot in Altus, Arkansas.

The Posts were among several large groups of German and Swiss Catholics who moved into the Arkansas River Valley in the 1870's and 1880's. These families and their religious leaders established entirely new communities and built some of the areas most beautiful churches, many on the historical register today.  Bound by their faith on this last of American frontiers, the highly-skilled craftsmen brought traditional European farming and winemaking skills to a promising geography. An excellent book on this immigration and period of Arkansas history is A Place Called Subiaco, by Hugh Assenmacher, O.S.B. (1977, Rose Publishing).

With the passing of the Volstead Act (Prohibition) in 1918, wine production dwindled to only sacramental wines for Arkansas' Catholic communities. Many vineyards languished. Some years after the Volstead Act was finally repealed, James Post and several other local growers formed the Altus Cooperative Winery in 1938.  Later purchased in 1947 by James and Mathew Post the Winery was renamed Post Winery, Inc.  The Post Familie brand name started when several of Matt's children joined him in the business in the 1980's.

Most of the vineyards around Altus are planted on a loamy plateau about 800-900 feet above sea level, nestled between the Ozark foothills and the Arkansas River Valley.  The growing season is long and characterized by humid hot days and warm nights. In this agriculturally rich area, the Posts grow American and European varietals and other fruits. They have developed unique fragrant wines and juices and have weathered dramatic climate, a fluctuating economy and ever-changing distribution and retail challenges to become the largest grapegrower and winery in Arkansas and one of the largest employers in the Altus area. Come taste the award-winning wines of Post!
